About the Artist
Anna Leyland
Anna Leyland is a contemporary New Zealand artist (full-time since 2012). She has successfully exhibited in over 30 exhibitions since 2001. After being an oil portrait Artist for 15 years, 2012 saw a complete change in style. Influenced by her Graphic Design background, utilising pattern making and symbolism her works invoke conversations relating to the celebration of diversity and multiculturalism within Aotearoa – a hallmark of New Zealand’s social ethos. Her works are directly influenced by the multicultural heritage of Anna and her son; Fijian, Wallisian, Futunaan, Scottish, Hungarian, English and Kiwi.
“I’ve had a paint brush in my hand since I was 2
according to my mum!
I like to communicate different themes through
my Art; often they have double meanings which are hidden in the Title...
Primarily my works are a celebration of Aotearoa; my love for our people, our
land, our ocean and the beauty of our multicultural nation.
As a fur mum, I know the absolute pure joy and
unconditional love that dogs bring into our lives... After having a very tough
year in 2022, my puppa has literally been my therapy dog and I'm just so
grateful for how he makes my son and I laugh and love every day... So when the
opportunity to raise money for other beautiful doggies to help others came up,
it was a given. There’s nothing better than creating Art that brings others joy
and goes towards a good cause!
In my design, I have continued my theme of
celebrating multiculturalism through pattern and symbolism. The many shades of
gold are associated with illumination, love, compassion and courage. The
triangles, a recurring symbol across many of my works, represent courage and
direction and are a prominent symbol used in Fijian tapa (simplified shark
teeth) representing protection, guidance and strength…
